What colors should your website be?

July 12, 2014 by Jenny

Many clients are not sure which colors to choose for their websites and marketing materials.

Questions of brand, audience, and desired outcomes all come into play.

  • What 3 adjectives best describe your business, and the impression you want to make on a visitor?
  • What do you want them to do on your site?

It turns out that many adjectives and desired actions actually do translate into colors, at least for a U.S.-based audience – and of course there is the chicken-and-egg role of branding in shaping color associations as well.

Check out this article from Fast Company, which is based on a number of different marketing and scientific studies, or this article from Science Daily.  If you ever wondered why the default color for hyperlinks is blue, you will find your answer!

This article from the marketing team at KISSMetrics cites additional sources and discusses how to use colors to your advantage.

WordCamp Portland 2013

November 15, 2013 by Jenny

WordCamp Portland 2013 was a huge smashing success!  I learned a great deal and met some incredible thinkers.

There’s a lot to unpack.

In the meantime, a cutting edge snippet:

The Twentyfourteen theme is in the works!  Interestingly, it’s a magazine theme which looks customizeable to all sorts of ends.

Plugin Ignite talk: 2 widget-based pagebuilders

July 16, 2013 by Jenny

I recently gave a presentation for the Portland WordPress Plugin Ignite Meetup, on two different plugins which can really help new users make a highly professionalized layout.

The two plugins are:

Widgitize Pages

Pagebuilder

Distinctions… for an isolated use situation, I’d use Widgetize Pages, but for building an entire site, I’d choose Pagebuilder.   Looks like it will be at least a year before anything similar becomes integrated into core, so this sort of plugin has a relatively long shelflife ahead.    In terms of support and ongoing plugin development, I’d also recommend Pagebuilder more highly.

WordCamp Seattle 2013

June 15, 2013 by Jenny

I recently attended WordCamp Seattle, where I stayed abreast of current WordPress environment developments, picked up a number of WordPress tips, and met a number of great people, including some of the original programmers. WordPress recently turned 10 and is THRIVING. I hope to link to the keynote by Morten Rand-Hendriksen as it becomes available because I’d recommend it to ANYONE who uses WordPress for anything. One great point of interest is the state of WordPress use today. BuiltWith keeps the stats on its growth, such as the following screenshot:
